About Memorial Quilters

FOREST LAKE MEMORIAL QUILTERS – What we do!

On the internet: memorialquilters.org

  • Here you will find the information on the guild and list of members. You need to be logged in to see the member’s only section. This is also where you will find the clue for the scavenger hunt, our current internet game. You are able to win once, and receive a prize.  The hunt changes each month.

Meetings – every third Thursday at 6:30 PM

  • Sign the attendance sheet and wear your name tag!

Every month:

  • Newsletter – sent via email (or snail mail) before the meeting to help prepare for the meeting. If you are having problems receiving it, call the newsletter editor.
  • Block of the month (BOM): pattern and fabric if provided to go along with your fabric. You may make up to three blocks. Put your name in the box for each block you sewed. A name is drawn, winner takes all the blocks. In December, we make 12.5-inch square unfinished Christmas blocks. Make up to three for exchange. White or white on white background fabric. Wrap each block separately with your name on the inside.
  • Give away table – everyone is welcome to bring unneeded sewing notions, fabric, patterns, magazines, etc. Please take home what doesn’t find a new home. What’s left will get donated to a charity thrift store.
  • Treats
  • Show and Tell
  • Programs – most months we have a program or demonstration on a quilting technique.

Special Activities:

  • Comfort quilts makes quilts to donate. The group meets in Hinckley at BJ’s home on the second Wednesday of the month at 9 am, bring your lunch.
  • Sleep-at-home retreats – four times a year at the senior center on Friday and Saturday 9 am to 8 pm, Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. Bring your lunch. Some of us go out for supper. Come and go as you can. $10 for the weekend. There will be a sign-up sheet on the table as you enter the door.
  • Half yard challenge. In 2025 the challenge will start in March. Bring your ½ yard of fabric in a brown bag with your name on the inside. You pick a different bag from the table and in May return a finished project for the person whose bag you picked up. It is your choice what that project is. The balance of fabric needed for the project you take from your stash. Put your name with the finished project and the name of the person who’s ½ yard you chose on the outside of the package. (You will also receive a finished project.)
  • Flag themed lap robes for Ecumen hospice veterans. Kits for you to sew are provided with all the materials except the thread. BJ has provided the long arm quilting service on them. You finish putting on the binding.
  • Presidents block. A block colors and design is picked out by the current president. The pattern and any fabric to go along with your fabric is provided. Each member is asked to sew a block for the president. The former president organizes the event.
  • Friendship quilt. For each year you are a member, your name goes in the hat. You can only win once. However, you participate each year sewing the block that the present year’s winner has chosen. You will receive the pattern and any fabric that may be provided. The balance of fabric comes from your stash. You will be told where to sign the block and when they need to be returned. You may be asked to make more than one block. When the blocks are collected, the current year’s winner will sew them together. The quilt is a queen size quilt.
  • Ryans Case for Smiles new project. Making a sausage roll or burrito pillowcase. Either a 27-inch case with a 9-inch cuff or 24-inch case with a 12-inch cuff. The pillowcases will be delivered to Cutting Edge quilt shop in Rush City for pick up and distribution to children in Minnesota hospitals.
  • Other activities like mystery quilts, Junk challenge, etc. will be “activated” during the year.
  • We visit a quilt shop during one of the fall months. We have lunch  together before the visit.
